Arijit Singh’s announcement on Tuesday night that he is stepping away from playback singing stunned fans. The singer, whose voice has shaped the musical identity of an entire generation, revealed on social media that he will not accept any new playback projects once he finishes his existing commitments.

In a post on his private X account, Arijit shared that he will continue creating music, while also explaining the reason behind his decision to retire.

Through a series of posts, Arijit announced his decision to step away from playback singing, while reassuring fans that his musical journey would continue.

In his first message, he wrote, “Hello, and Happy New Year to everyone. I want to thank you all for the immense love you’ve given me over the years as listeners. I’m happy to share that I will not be taking on any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I’m calling it a day. It has been a wonderful journey.”

He followed this shortly with another post, saying, “God has been extremely kind to me. I am a lover of good music, and going forward, I will keep learning and creating more on my own as a small artiste. Thank you once again for all your support.”

Arijit noted that he still needs to complete some remaining commitments, adding that listeners can look forward to a few new releases in 2026.

Responding to fans’ questions about his decision, the singer shared that it wasn’t driven by a single factor. “There isn’t just one reason for this—there are many, and I’ve been wanting to do it for a long time. I’ve finally found the courage,” he said.

He also admitted that restlessness played a role. “It’s quite simple—I get bored easily. That’s why I keep changing the arrangements of the same songs when I perform them on stage. So, yes, I got bored. To feel alive, I need to explore and create different kinds of music.”

Singh also said he wanted to make room for fresh talent to come forward. “Another reason is that I’m eager to hear new singers emerge and truly inspire me,” he said.

Arijit reassured fans that music will remain his focus and that he has no plans to step away from creating it. “I want to return to Indian classical music. I want to go back to making music and start afresh,” he said, adding, “I will create my own music and release it when I feel ready.”
