The Indian Parliament will on Wednesday pay obituary tributes to Begum Khaleda Zia, former prime minister of Bangladesh and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), during a sitting of the Rajya Sabha.

According to the official List of Business of the upper house of the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha) for January 28, obituary references will be made to the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, alongside tributes to former Indian parliamentarians.

The homage is scheduled to take place about half an hour after the conclusion of the President of India’s address to both Houses of Parliament, when members of the Upper House will formally remember leaders who have recently passed away.

Begum Khaleda Zia served as Bangladesh’s prime minister several times and remained a central figure in the country’s politics for decades.

As chairperson of the BNP, she played a key role in shaping Bangladesh’s political landscape, particularly during the country’s transition periods and democratic movements.

The decision of the Indian Parliament to pay tribute reflects the recognition of her political stature in South Asia and her role in Bangladesh–India relations during her tenure in office.

The obituary reference will be placed on record by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat as part of parliamentary proceedings.

On December 30, 2025, Bangladesh's first female prime minister, Khaleda Zia, died.
