The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested two individuals in connection with a murder case filed over killing a battery-run rickshaw driver Saiful Islam, in the capital’s Turag area.

The arrested are Md Shahidul Islam, 34, from Lalmonirhat and Swapan Sheikh alias Kabir Sheikh, 28, from Netrokona.

A team of RAB-1 conducted drives on Saturday and arrested Shahidul from Dhamrai and Swapan from Diabari area, said the company commander Md Shahidul Islam at a press conference at the battalion headquarters in Uttara on Sunday.

RAB-1 carried out shadow investigation and intelligence surveillance to arrest the suspects involved in the murder.

During initial interrogation, the arrested confessed that the murder was planned, said the company commander, adding that seven people were involved in the murder — Babul, Naim, Sobahan, Yasin, Shahidul, Swapan and Nargis — brought him to the Kacha Bazar area near the Kamar Para police box under Turag police station.

The victim was made unconscious inside the market, he mentioned, then Yasin drove away the victim’s rickshaw and the rest of the accomplices threw the victim in a lake in Turag.

Later, Babul sold the rickshaw and gave Shahidul Tk 7000 and Swapan Tk 4000, he said, mentioning that Babul, Naeem, Sobahan and Nargis are currently in jail in various cases.

The arrested duo was handed over to the police for further legal proceedings, according to the RAB.

On February 17, Saiful’s family members filed a general dairy with Ashulia police station as he did not return home after he went out for work on February 15 evening.

Saiful’s body was recovered from the lake on February 18 and his wife Lovely Begum filed a murder case with Turag police station.
