Bangladesh industries minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir on Sunday told Jatiya Sangsad that initiatives had been taken to import an additional 2,00,000 tonnes of urea from SABIC, Saudi Arabia; and 1,00,000 tonnes from Fertiglobe, UAE; under government-to-government agreements, along with 4,00,000 tonnes through international quotation methods.

Amid the gas shortage, urea production at five public and one private urea fertiliser factories had been halted since March.

In a written answer to the Chattogram-15 lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury, the minister also said that urea production at the Shahjalal Fertiliser Company could be ensured from May 1, 2026, as the energy ministry assured a gas supply to the factory.

At present, only the Ghorashal-Polash Fertiliser Public Limited Company is in operation, he said.

To maintain normal production at the TSP and DAP fertiliser factories, he added, measures had also been taken to import key raw materials, such as rock phosphate, phosphoric acid and sulphur, through tenders as well as G2G agreements from producing countries including Morocco, Jordan, Oman, the UAE, China and Malaysia.
