Midjourney, the company best known for its artificial intelligence (AI) image generator, has unveiled a new healthcare-focused venture centred on full-body ultrasound scanning.

The initiative, called Midjourney Medical, includes its first hardware product, the Midjourney Scanner, a full-body imaging system designed to create detailed three-dimensional (3D) views of a person's internal anatomy using ultrasound technology.

According to a recent blog post by Midjourney, the scanner uses dozens of ultrasound imaging modules arranged within a ring-shaped structure. Users stand on a platform that descends through water while thousands of sensors emit ultrasonic waves from multiple angles. The system then analyses how those waves travel through the body to generate images of muscles, fat, bones and organs, creating a three-dimensional map of the body in approximately one minute.

The company plans to open a dedicated facility, known as the Midjourney Spa, in San Francisco's Union Square before the end of 2027. The site is expected to feature multiple scanning rooms alongside fitness and wellness facilities, including a gym, saunas and cold-water immersion pools.

Midjourney said the technology could eventually achieve image quality comparable to magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, in certain applications.

The company added that some future uses of the scanner would require clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. For now, it is focusing on generating what it calls "body composition maps", which it says face fewer regulatory requirements than diagnostic imaging systems.
