Five individuals were killed in separate road accidents in Gazipur, Dinajpur, and Jamalpur districts today.
In Gazipur, two people were killed as a truck hit a battery-run auto rickshaw on Tongi-Kaliganj regional road this morning.
The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Hanif Mia, 35, and passenger Sabbir Alam, 25.
The accident occurred around 10:00am in the Majhukhan area on the regional road, said Amirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Pubail Police Station.
Quoting witnesses, the OC said, a speeding truck crashed into the auto-rickshaw, killing the driver and a passenger on the spot and injuring several others. The injured were transported to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital.
The truck driver fled the scene. Police seized the vehicles and legal action will be taken regarding the incident, the OC said.
Meanwhile, two people, including a helper, were killed, and the driver injured after a speeding oil tanker lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Hili this afternoon.
The accident occurred around 1:00pm on the Hili-Birampur regional highway in Dangapara, Hakimpur upazila, Dinajpur.
The deceased have been identified as Rasel, 36, the lorry's helper and son of Surut Mondal from Matkhod village in Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat, and Sabbir, 34, from Sultanpur village in the same upazila.
SM Jahangir Alam, the investigation officer of Hili Police Station, stated that the lorry, operated by Chowdhury Filling Station in Panchbibi, was on its way to Parbatipur to collect fuel. At Dangapara, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and fall into a roadside ditch, he added.
"The lorry's helper and another person died instantly, while the injured driver was rescued and taken to the hospital," he said.
Authorities are investigating the incident.
Additionally, one was killed, and three others were critically injured in a road accident in Jamalpur this morning.
The accident occurred around 9:00am at Nalerchar Taltola Bazar in the upazila.
The deceased has been identified as Anis, 45, a resident of Bhaluka village in Kulia Union, who worked as a legal assistant at the Jamalpur District Court, confirmed Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Melandah Police Station.
Quoting the locals, the OC said, "Anis left home around 8:30am to head to the Jamalpur court. While traveling by autorickshaw from Melandaha to Jamalpur town, the driver lost control at Nalerchar Taltola Bazar, causing the vehicle to overturn."
He also said, "Anis sustained a critical head injury, leading to excessive bleeding, and succumbed to his injuries instantly."
