The National Board of Revenue’s central intelligence cell on Tuesday raided former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed’s Savana Eco Resort and Natural Park in Gopalganj.
The raid continued between 11:00am and 2:00pm on the resort built on 621 bigha of land, finding out proof of huge tax avoidance, said a press release shared by the Gopalganj district police later on the day.
A 15-member team, led by NBR’s central intelligence cell deputy director Shah Mohammad Fazle Rahi, conducted the raid and scrutinised investment, income and expenditure data and also examined data and information found in computers at the resort, the release said.
‘We have found proof of huge tax avoidance in the resort,’ Shah Mohammad said.
He said that they would be able to give more information on illegal asset accumulation after further investigation and scrutiny of documents.
Gopalganj superintendent of police Md Mizanur Rahman also confirmed the visit of the NBR.
Amid massive allegations of corruption published in the media, the anti-corruption agency on April 18 last year decided to run an inquiry into the assets of Benazir and his family following which Benazir with his family members left the country.
On December 10, 2021, the United States declared the then-IGP Benazir ineligible for entry into the country for ‘gross violations of human rights’ while serving as the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion.
