A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Saturday sent ousted Awami League government former ministers—Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod president Hasanul Haq Inu– to jail  over allegations of killing Emon Hossain Gazi in the Jatrabari area on August 5.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zunaid passed the order as police produced them before the court on completion of their seven-day remand in the case.

Although former state minister for posts, telecommunications and ICT Zunaid Ahmad Palak completed his remand in the same case, he was again placed on remand which was ordered previously in another case, Jatrabari police station sub-inspector Mujahidul Islam said.

According to the case statement, Emon Gazi sustained severe bullet wounds during a student-people demonstration on the Chittagong Road under the Jatrabari police station on August 5 and died on the spot.

On August 28, Emon’s brother Anwar Hossain filed the case with the Jatrabari police station.

Menon was arrested in the city’s Gulshan area on August 22 while Inu in the Uttara area on August 26 and Palak in the Nikunja residential area under Khilkhet police station on August 14. 

Inu and Menon both were active members of the AL-led 14 party alliance and close allies of deposed prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina, who resigned and fled to India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.

Actress Shami Kaiser and chairman of private entertainment channel Gaan Bangla Kawshik Hossain Taposh were also sent to jail on Saturday on completion of their remand in an attempt to murder case filed with the Uttara East police station, the state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported. 

After hearing the arguments of both the sides, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq ordered to send them to Dhaka Central Jail.
