A Juba League activist has filed a case accusing 187 individuals, including several top Awami League leaders, of orchestrating and carrying out attacks during the anti-discrimination student movement and mass uprising in Chattogram.
Juba League activist Kafil Uddin filed the case on Monday in the court of Chattogram metropolitan magistrate Jewel Deb.
The filing of the case by a leader of Juba League, youth front of now ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League, has sparked widespread debate and criticism as Kafil Uddin himself was allegedly involved in attacks during the student-led mass uprising that toppled the authoritarian Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5.
He is also facing three cases, including charges related to arms and narcotics, filed with the Kotwali police, and a general diary filed with the Anwara police.
He has previously been arrested and jailed on multiple occasions, according to the police and local people.
Kafil Uddin, reportedly active in Awami League politics, is from Barkhain union in Anwara upazila of Chattagram district. He currently resides in Lane-2 of Nandankanan under the Kotwali police in the port city. Local residents claim he is a known follower of Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar, a leader of Chattogram Awami League.
According to the case statement, Kafil Uddin alleged that while he was participating in the student-mass uprising at New Market roundabout on August 4, instructions from the key accused led to gunfire and the detonation of cocktails, resulting in injuries to his hand. He was subsequently hospitalised.
Kafil stated that the delay in filing the case was due to his recovery period and the time required for gathering the names and addresses of those involved.
The case includes former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, former inspector general of police Abdullah Al Mamun, former lawmakers MA Motaleb and Mujibur Rahman, Jatiya Party Chattogram city president Solaiman Alam Sheth, former Police Bureau of Investigation chief Banaj Kumar Majumder, former Detective Branch chief Harun Or Rashid, former police officer Biplob Kumar Sarkar, former Chattogram police commissioner Saiful Islam, and former Kotwali police officer-in-charge Obaidul Haq.
But in a separate case Kafil Uddin himself accused of involvement in the attack on the student movement.
On November 10, a student named Md Raiyan filed a case with the Kotwali police against 278 individuals, naming Kafil as accused number 23. The primary accused in the case is former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury.
In the complaint, Raiyan alleged that the accused, acting in collusion, attacked protesters and opened fire on students and the crowd gathered in front of the Municipal School in the New Market area on August 4. Raiyan stated that he suffered gunshot wounds in his eye, hands and legs. Additionally, 100–150 unidentified individuals were also accused in the case.
Notably, in the case filed by Kafil, Raiyan has been listed as accused number 92.
