An 18-year-old college student was allegedly strangled by her husband in Dhaka's Khilgaon area, police said.
The victim, Sanjida Akhter, also known as Maria, was a first-year management student at Lalmatia Mohila College.
Police arrested her husband, Saiful Islam, 21, a Foodpanda delivery rider, shortly after the incident.
Police recovered Sanjida's body from a ground-floor apartment near Haji Mosque in South Goran at around 8:00pm yesterday.
Sanjida's brother, Md Chan Mia, said their mother repeatedly tried to contact her by phone yesterday evening but received no response. When the family called Saiful, he asked them to go to the house and check on her.
According to Chan Mia, family members found Sanjida lying unconscious on the kitchen balcony floor with marks around her neck and immediately called the national emergency service by dialling 999.
Khilgaon Police Station Sub-Inspector Ahsanullah said police recovered the body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
In a press release, Harun-Or-Rashid, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Motijheel Division, said the body was found with a jute rope wrapped around the neck.
He said Saiful was arrested shortly after the incident using technological surveillance. During primary interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing his wife.
According to police, the couple, both from Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj, had been married for about a year. Investigators suspect that ongoing marital disputes involving Saiful's parents may have led to the killing.
Chan Mia filed a murder case with Khilgaon Police Station today. Police said Saiful has been produced before a court.
In a separate incident, the body of an unidentified woman, believed to be around 28 years old, was found hanging from a pomelo tree with a rope around her neck at an abandoned house in Banglamotor.
After being informed by locals, a team from Shahbagh Police Station recovered the body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam told The Daily Star that the woman's identity could not be established immediately. A forensic team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is working to identify her, he said.
Quoting locals, the SI said the woman was homeless. Police suspect she died by suicide sometime during the night, although the exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy.
