Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” emerged as the top contenders as the 2026 BAFTA nominations were announced on Tuesday, reinforcing the two films’ dominance across this awards season.
Anderson’s politically charged comedy-drama “One Battle After Another” secured 14 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director and multiple acting categories. Close behind, Coogler’s “Sinners” received 13 nods—the highest number ever earned by a film directed by a Black filmmaker in BAFTA history. The film had earlier made headlines after collecting a record 16 nominations at the 2026 Oscars.
Among British productions, “I Swear”, “Pillion” and “The Ballad of Wallis Island” were nominated in the Best British Film category.
Chloé Zhao’s Shakespeare-inspired drama “Hamnet” earned 11 nominations, becoming BAFTA’s most-nominated film by a female director, tying with Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme”, which also picked up 11 nods, including a Best Actor nomination for Timothée Chalamet.
As in previous years, the BAFTA shortlist closely mirrors outcomes seen at the Golden Globes and the Oscars, further underlining a two-horse race between Anderson and Coogler in this year’s awards circuit.
