Humayun Ahmed is regarded as one of the most celebrated writers and one of the best storytellers in the history of Bangla literature. The prolific author and director brought many iconic characters to life through his screenplays and stories. On the 73rd birth anniversary of Humayun Ahmed, we pay homage to some of his wonderful characters, which have etched a place in our hearts.

Baker Bhai

During the 90s, people brought out processions on the streets, against the execution of Baker Bhai, a fictional character played by eminent actor and Member of Parliament Asaduzzaman Noor in "Kothao Keu Nei".

"Humayun Ahmed's biggest strength was his wonderful stories and dialogues. Through his Baker Bhai, I was able to make a place in people's hearts," mentions Asaduzzaman Noor.

On the other hand, Suborna Mustafa spoke about Muna, who falls in love with Baker Bhai at one point in her life, but is left heartbroken after his imprisonment and death.

"Muna is really a wonderful role. I had a lot of space to showcase my acting range in the series. I tried my best to portray this character sincerely," she shares.

Misir Ali

The iconic pseudo psychologist Misir Ali, conceived by Humayun Ahmed, always uses logic for each decision in his life. His precision and astounding ability to read situations make him a favourite of audiences.

Noted actor Abul Hayat essayed the role of MIsir Ali on the television screen, whereas Chanchal Chowdhury played the role in the 2018 film "Debi".

"Misir Ali is one of my most favourite characters, as he uses reasoning to solve problems. I have a strong sense of respect and love for Humayun Ahmed," says Chanchal.

In "Debi", renowned actress Jaya Ahsan played Ranu, a woman who is obsessed with a paranormal presence around her and can see the future.

Himu

The most popular character created by Humayun Ahmed has to be the eccentric yet lovable Himu, the man who dons a yellow pocket less panjabi. The first book out of the Himu franchise was "Moyurakkhi".  Fazlul Kabir Tuhin played the role of Himu in the tele-fiction "Nokkhotrer Raat."

Furthermore, Humayun Ahmed often named the heroines of his stories Rupa. Even Himu's love interest is called Rupa. The character's favourite attire is a blue sharee. To this day, many female fans of Humayun Ahmed often wear blue sharees to the Ekushey Boi Mela, as a homage to the author.

Farid Mama and Dr Asgor

Farid Mama and Dr Asgor from "Bohubrihi" and "Aaj Robibar" respectively, are two of the most beloved television characters, conceived by Humayun Ahmed.  Renowned actor Aly Zaker essayed both the roles brilliantly.

In "Aaj Robibar", Dr Asgor stays inside his room, and talks about the various issues in his house. One of the funniest bits of the series takes place whenever Moti (Faruk Ahmed) tries to take a peek inside Dr Asgor's room. Every time Dr Asgor catches Moti sneaking, he gives Moti a tight slap.

Kushum

"Srabon Megher Din" is one of the most celebrated films of Humayun Ahmed, starring Meher Afroz Shaon, Zahid Hasan, and Mahfuz Ahmed in the lead roles.

Shaon garnered immense popularity and praise for her simple yet powerful performance as Kushum in the film.
