The National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced the 53-member full committee of its women's wing, Jatiya Nari Shakti.
However, a leader has announced her resignation from all party posts after expressing surprise at finding her name on the list.
The leader, former Dhaka University student Dyuti Aranya Chowdhury, was named as a joint member secretary in the committee published yesterday.
"I had decided to become inactive in the NCP before the (national) election. I am surprised to see my name on the Jatiya Nari Shakti's central committee today. I have no involvement with this committee; I have resigned from all NCP posts and sent in my resignation letter," Dyuti wrote in a Facebook post yesterday.
She had previously served as the NCP's northern region organiser and a senior joint member secretary of its youth wing, Jatiya Jubo Shakti.
According to NCP sources, Dyuti had strong objections regarding the party joining the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party electoral alliance. She has remained inactive in NCP politics since the alliance was formed.
When contacted, NCP’s Nari Shakti Member Secretary Mahmuda Mitu told The Daily Star, “We were not aware that she no longer wants to be a part of NCP. We included her in the committee after receiving her name from Jubo Shakti. We assumed they had spoken to her, and that is why we did not reconfirm it.”
“Since she now says she does not want to be with us, we will first speak to her and then make a decision,” she added.
On March 8, marking International Women's Day, a partial committee of the women's wing was announced with Monira Sharmin as convener, Mahmuda Mitu as member secretary, and Nusrat Tabassum as chief organiser.
In the newly announced full committee, Shagufta Bushra and Monjila Jhuma have been made senior joint convener and senior joint member secretary, respectively. The committee also comprises five joint conveners, six joint member secretaries, seven joint chief organisers, and 30 organisers.
