A 45th BCS candidate recommended for the cooperative cadre and two government employees have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a proxy examination racket that helped candidates secure government jobs through fraud, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said today.
The CID’s Noakhali unit arrested Zulfikar Ali alias Raihan, 29, junior assistant manager at the Matarbari Coal Power Project in Cox’s Bazar, and office assistants Nurunnabi, 55, and Sohel, 40, of Tax Zone-2 under the Divisional Tax Commissioner’s Office in Agrabad, Chattogram, on July 30.
Zulfikar was recently recommended for the cooperative cadre in the 45th BCS examination, according to a press release signed by CID Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Abu Taleb.
The arrests were made in a case filed over allegations that candidates used proxy examinees in a recruitment test under Tax Zone-Noakhali and secured jobs through deception.
According to CID, the recruitment process was held for various posts from grades 13 to 20. Written examinations were held at three centres in Noakhali on June 5, followed by practical and viva examinations. A total of 112 candidates were initially selected.
During document verification before joining, officials found discrepancies between the handwriting in candidates’ application forms and the checklists filled out during viva examinations. Further verification revealed inconsistencies, raising suspicions.
CID said three candidates -- Kamal Uddin, Nasfurullah and Sujon -- admitted that they did not personally sit for parts of the recruitment process and that proxy candidates appeared on their behalf.
The three candidates were handed over to Sudharam Model Police Station, where a case was filed on June 22.
CID said its investigation found that an organised group had been supplying proxy examinees in exchange for money to appear in government job examinations on behalf of candidates.
As part of the ongoing operation, CID in separate drives arrested Nurunnabi, Sohel and Zulfikar on July 30.
With the three, six accused named in the case have so far been arrested. The suspects were produced before a court today, CID added.
