Bangladeshi film “Roid” has secured theatrical distribution rights in Australia and New Zealand through Screenxcope, in partnership with DeshiEvents. According to a news article published by Variety, the film is scheduled for release across both territories in early June.
Directed by Mejbaur Rahman Sumon, “Roid” premiered in the Tiger Competition section at the 55th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam and has also earned a selection at the Seattle International Film Festival. The project marks Sumon’s second feature after “Hawa”, which became Bangladesh’s official submission to the Academy Awards in 2022 and was the country’s first film to enter US box office charts.
Produced by Bongo alongside Facecard Production, the film also features Apoorva Bakshi as executive producer under Awedacious Originals. Set in rural Bangladesh during the pre-digital era, the story follows Sadhu, a struggling tenant farmer living with his unpredictable wife. Though he repeatedly tries to abandon her in distant places, she continually returns, shaping the narrative into a reflection on longing, attachment, and destiny.
Speaking about the acquisition, Sakib Iftekhar described “Roid” as a universally resonant film that transcends cultural boundaries, adding that its emotional depth aligns with the company’s vision for championing distinctive cinema.
Meanwhile, Sayed Faiz said the film combines artistic strength with audience appeal across diaspora and broader markets, expressing enthusiasm about bringing it to cinemas in Australia and New Zealand.
Screenxcope has previously distributed internationally recognized independent films such as “Tiger Stripes” and “Pooja, Sir”. More details regarding the release schedule and distribution plans are expected to be announced soon.
The film features Nazifa Tushi and Mostafizur Noor Imran in lead roles, featuring Gazi Rakayet and Ahsabul Yamin Riad among others.
