Moulvibazar-based theatre troupe Manipuri Theatre staged the fourth show of its production titled Dhwajo Mestorir Moron at the Natmandap of Ghoramara village of Kamalganj in Moulvibazar on Friday.
The play has been directed and written by Subhasis Sinha.
Dhwajo Mestorir Moron, based on a story by Smritikumar Singh, depicts the struggle of a carpenter who is famous for building traditional Manipuri houses but most of his works are replaced by modern architecture.
Dhwajo came from a poor family and learned carpentry diligently and later he became famous for his talent for traditional Manipuri architecture.
At the age of 80, Dhwajo was frustrated when his sons tore down his own house for an upgrade and planned to build modern architecture instead of following their tradition.
Performed in a mix of Bengali and Bishnupriya Manipuri, the production aims to preserve the authenticity of the community’s language and traditions.
Renowned actress Jyoti Sinha performed in the play as narrator in Bengali while the roles of young and old Dhwajo were played by Samarjit Singh and Bidhan Singh respectively.
Swarnali, Shiuli, Subarna, Rajkanta, Diptangshu, Ruhit, Simanto, Anannya and Swarnali acted in the play while Sharmila Sinha, Anjana Sinha and Roni Singh played the music.
The costume of the production was designed by Jyoti Sinha and the lighting was designed by Mohammd Asadurjaman Aslam Molla.
‘Manipuri Theatre revived the production which was first staged in 2005, and the current version features refined elements and a blend of senior performers and emerging actors,’ said the play director Subhasis Sinha.
The two consecutive shows of Dhwajo Mestorir Moron will also be held today at the same venue.
