The senior joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, complained on Thursday that the police in Khulna had started harassing the leaders and activists of the party before a rally declared by six defeated city corporation election mayoral candidates nominated by the party.

He also complained that the police had been wasting time and were not giving permission to the organisers for the rally which is scheduled for Saturday.

He was addressing a press conference at the party’s central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka.

BNP organising secretary and city president Nazrul Islam Manju was holding meetings with the police officials for getting permission, Rizvi added.

Central leaders of the party Abul Khaiyer Bhuiyan, Khairul Kabir Khokan and others attended the press conference.

Such a rally in Barishal held on February 18 amid obstacles was the first of the six planned rallies in six cities announced by BNP’s defeated mayoral candidates on February 5 protesting against rigging in the recently concluded city elections and demanding neutral elections across the country.

BNP candidates for Dhaka south and north, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal at a joint press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka announced the programmes.
