Five more cases — one on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, three on murder charges and one on attempt to murder charge — have been filed against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides.
The new cases took to at least 110 the number of case filed against Hasina since August 5, when she resigned and fled to India in the face of student-people uprising.
The new genocide and crimes against humanity case was filed on Tuesday against Hasina and 53 of her associates, including former her cabinet and party colleagues and police officials for the killing of Dhaka Residential College student Farhanul Islam Bhuiyan in police firing at Dhanmondi on July 18.
The case was filed by Farhanul’s father, Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan, with the International Crimes Tribunal.
This is the 13th ICT case filed against Hasina and her associates.
In addition to Hasina, the accused include former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Anisul Huq, Hasan Mahmud, Hasanul Haq Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, Matia Chowdhury, Abdur Razzaque, AKM Mozammel Haque, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, Junaid Ahmed Polak, Mohammad Ali Arafat, former Dhaka South City mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and his brother and Jubo League president Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash.
Top police officers named in the case include former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former Detective Branch chief Harun-Or-Rashid, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Rapid Action Battalion Director General Harun-Or-Rashid, and former DMP joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar, along with DMP deputy commissioner for Mohammadpur HM Azimul Haq and additional deputy commissioner for Mohammadpur Rawshanul Haq Saikat.
The victim’s father alleged that the killing of Farhanul was premeditated and carried out by on-duty police officers and local ruling party leaders under direct orders from Hasina, her cabinet members, and senior police officials.
The second case was filed against Hasina and 134 others on Tuesday over the death of Riazul Talukder, an activist of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on August 4.
The victim’s brother Rubel Talukder filed the case with the court of Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Saddam Hossain.
Later, the magistrate directed the officer-in-charge of the Jatrabari police station to register the case.
Former Asaduzzaman Khan, Obaidul Quader, former water resources deputy minister Enamul Haque Shamim, former AL lawmakers Moshiur Rahman Mollah, Iqbal Hossain Apu and Nahim Razzak were also named in the case.
In his complaint, the complainant said his brother took part in the student movement against discrimination at Jatrabari crossing at about 5:00pm on August 4 when Riazul was shot dead.
The Third and the fourth cases were filed with the Mohammadpur police station against Hasina and others for the killing of youth Rony on July 19and attempted murder of auto-rickshaw driver Mehedi and August 4.
Rony’s mother filed the case against Hasina and 33 others on Monday.
Victim Mehedi filed the attempted murder case on September 8 agaisnt Hasina and eight others.
Mohammadpur police officer-in-charge Iftekar Hasan confirmed the filing of the cases on Tuesday.
The fifth case was filed against 40 people, including Hasina, Anisul Huq and Obaidul Quader for the killing Md Shakil.
The victim’s mother Helena filed the case with the Jatrabari police station on Monday.
Confirming the matter, Jatrabari police inspector Md Mohsin Hossain told New Age on Tuesday that 200–300 AL leaders and activists, and 80–100 police members were also made accused in the case.
