Md Emdad Ul Bari

Major General (retd) Md Emdad Ul Bari was appointed as chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on Tuesday for a three-year term, according to a circular issued by the Ministry of Public Administration.

The ministry’s circular stated that Major General (Retd) Md Emdad Ul Bari has been appointed as a commissioner of the BTRC in the management and administration category for a period of three years, and as chairman under the condition that he resigns from other institutions and organisations.

Bari previously served as the director general of systems and services at the BTRC from January 2015 to February 2018.

During this period, he played a significant role in shaping key regulatory policies in the telecommunications sector, including mobile number portability, tower sharing and the establishment of guidelines on significant market power.

The appointment of Md Emdad Ul Bari came after the resignation of the former BTRC chairman, Mohiuddin Ahmed, on August 14.

Mohiuddin’s departure was part of a series of reshuffles and transfers in key government positions, which took place after the fall of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina on August 5.
