The police on Tuesday filed a charge sheet against 17 people in the case over the killing of Inquilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman Hadi and said that the young politician was killed due to the ‘political vendetta’ of the Awami League, activities of which are now banned.

The charge sheet named Bangladesh Chhatra League’s former activist Faisal Karim Masud and his associate and Juba League activist Alamgir Sheikh for their direct involvement in the killing, and Juba League’s Pallabi thana unit former president and Dhaka North City Corporation ward No 6 former councillor Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi for guiding the duo in carrying out the murder.

The other accused named in the charge sheet are Faisal’s father Humayun Kabir, mother Hasi Begum, wife Shaheda Parvin Samia, sister Jasmine Akhter, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, alleged girlfriend Maria Akter Lima, Faisal’s associate Md Kabir, Shipu’s friend Faisal, and six other individuals - Philip Snal, Sibion Dio, Sanjoy Chisim, Mukti Mahmud, Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Ujjal, and Aminul Islam Raju.

These 14 people are accused of helping Faisal and Alamgir flee the country and hiding the firearms used in the murder.

Of them, Philip Snal, Sibion Dio and Sanjoy Chisim allegedly directly helped Faisal and Alamgir in fleeing the country illegally, according to the police.

Five of the accused, Faisal, Alamgir, Bappi, Philip and Jasmine are still in hiding. The remaining 12 are now in jail, the police said.

Hadi was shot in the head from a close range from a motorcycle in Dhaka on December 12, 2025 while he had been conducting a campaign as an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the next general election. He was later flown to Singapore where he died in a hospital on December 18, 2025.

Addressing a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s media centre on Tuesday, the metropolitan police’s additional deputy commissioner for Detective Branch, Md Shafiqul Islam, said that Hadi was shot dead due to political vendetta.

Hadi started a different political trend as the spokesperson of the Inquilab Mancha and issued various critical and strong statements about the activities of the Awami League and the banned Chhatra League, he said.

‘The leaders and activists of Chhatra League became angry with his statements,’ said Shafiqul, mentioning political vendetta as the motive for the murder.

He said that shooter Faisal and the bike rider Alamgir carried out the killing while Bappi assisted their escape from the country, he added.

When asked whether Hadi was murdered under the command of Bappi or not, the police officer told New Age, ‘The murder was carried out under his guidance and he assisted the killers to escape.’

At the press briefing, he mentioned that following the confessional statements of suspected arrestees, scrutinising CCTV footage, forensic reports of firearms and bullets, mobile and other electronic devices, the investigators found involvement of 17 people in the case.

‘If any new information is found regarding the case in the future or if evidence of anyone else’s involvement is found, a supplementary charge sheet will be filed against them,’ he said.

Leaders and activists of Inquilab Mancha have been staging demonstrations since the murder demanding justice.

Inquilab Mancha has been campaigning at different places in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country since Saturday to press home their four demands, including arrests and speedy trial of the killers.

Under the programme, leaders and activists of Inquilab Mancha on Tuesday campaigned at Shahbagh, Science Laboratory, Mohammadpur, Rayer Bazar, Mirpur and other places in the city, issuing an ultimatum for the government to complete the trial against Hadi’s killers by January 20.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police on December 28 said that the prime suspect, Faisal, and his associate Alamgir had fled to India’s Meghalaya.

Inquilab Mancha member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber on December 14 filed an attempted murder case with Paltan police station, which was later recorded as a murder case.

The case was handed over to the Detective Branch for investigation.

Hadi was considered a leading face in the July uprising, which led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

From the Inquilab Mancha, Hadi led major programmes, including a long march towards Dumboor Dam in India demanding a fair share of the water of trans-boundary rivers, street programmes demanding a national day on the death anniversary of Abrar Fahad, and programmes supporting martyr and wounded families during the July uprising.
